Tree Selection Tips for Saddle Hunters: Find the Best Setup

Finding the “perfect” tree for your saddle hunting setup can be overwhelming. Factors like tree size, cover, and lean angle all come into play, making it a tough decision. No matter what, with the versatility of a saddle, there will always be a tree to get your saddle set up in.

Tree Selection is Situational
Is there a “perfect” tree? I’m sure there is one out there, but I doubt I’ll ever find it. I have sat up in many great trees, but many horrible trees as well. Some of the best trees were in the worst spots, and some of the worst trees were in the best spots, it is all situational. If it’s where the deer are, you’re in a position to succeed. Focus on key factors like cover, size, and lean angle to maximize your chances.

Your Best Bet for a Saddle Hunting Setup

I approach a saddle set up differently than hanging a hang on stand. A tree that is on the smaller side of medium is what I prefer. It is easier to set up in a tree you can fit your arms around.

A straight tree is the best bet, but one that leans slightly away from you is also very comfortable. A tree leaning towards you is very uncomfortable and you will only make that mistake once.

Size: A smaller tree, just big enough to wrap your arms around, is ideal.
Lean: Choose a straight tree or one that leans slightly away from you. Avoid trees that lean toward you for comfort.
Cover: The more natural cover, the better. Background cover can be just as effective as front cover to break up your outline.

The perfect tree has cover, this is important. When saddle hunting, you are essentially hanging off the side of the tree like a branch, well, if you are the only branch, you stick out. In most cases, the more, and bigger the branches, the better. Not too many that you can’t maneuver your bow, but enough to break up your outline. Cover also doesn’t have to be in front of you. You would be amazed at what some background cover can do when it comes to hiding.

Conclusion
While finding the perfect tree might seem daunting, it’s all about balance. Choose a tree that provides good cover, is easy to set up in, and most importantly, puts you where the deer are. With practice, you’ll get better at identifying the right spots and improving your saddle hunting success.
